"Then I realised of course it wasn't turbulence, you don’t get turbulence up at those sorts of heights. There's nothing to cause turbulence, basically.
"I realised it was what's called an engine surge at Mach 2. An engine surge is when there's a breakdown in the airflow to the engine for some reason or another.

"There's a massive drill that you go through, which is basically a troubleshooting drill, where you check item by item to try and identify what caused the problem.
