En el número de agosto de 1974 de Aeroplane Monthly, el piloto de bombarderos de la Primera Guerra Mundial, Sqn Ldr C. P. O. Bartlett, DSC, relata su época de piloto de biplanos entre 1916-18

En septiembre de 1916, tras completar mi entrenamiento de vuelo en Chingford y un breve curso de artillería y lanzamiento de bombas en Eastchurch, me uní al Ala nº 5 del Real Servicio Aéreo Naval en el aeródromo de Coudekerque, a tres millas tierra adentro de Dunkerque.
