De Havilland's STOL workhorse
When it comes to rugged, utilitarian aircraft, there aren't many out there that can compare to the DHC-4 Caribou. Initially designed as a versatile, tactical transport aircraft to meet the needs of the United States Army, it exemplifies classic 1950s de Havilland development, featuring a high-wing, Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) design that made it easy to get in and out of remote locations such as jungles, deserts and mountainous terrains, while being capable of transporting troops, equipment and supplies in these challenging environments. At the time, it was de Havilland’s biggest aircraft design to date, progressing from initial concepts first seen in the famous Beaver and Otter airframes.
