Mark Berent remembers his time delivering former RAF Sabres across Europe
COLD WAR CANADAIR SABRE
Iwas over the French Alps when the canopy of my Sabre Mk.4 suddenly slid open. The frame banged me on my helmet as it moved back towards the stops, then hit me again as it slid closed. The second it opened the cockpit depressurised with a big swoosh and all the air in my lungs gushed out like a blown tyre as my ears popped.
