Hong Kong Reopens to Transit Travellers

Starting from today (June 1), Hong Kong International is gradually resuming transit services to some passengers after they were suspended at the hub on March 25 in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Only those who have been checked through at the origin port and are scheduled to take a flight operated by the same airline group will be accepted.

Alongside the gradual resumption of services, all passengers and airport staff are required to wear face masks in all accessible areas of the facility. Other health measures include body temperature scanning upon arrival, the maintenance of at least 1.5m (5ft) social distancing when standing in queues, the provision of hand sanitiser stations throughout the site and the disinfection of boarding gate areas and air bridges after each arriving flight.

Those passing through the airport will also be asked to head straight for their connecting flights immediately upon arrival and will be given stickers at transfer points for identification purposes.

Vivian Cheung, executive director of airport operations at Airport Authority Hong Kong, said: “On the basis of protecting health and safety of [travellers] and airport staff as our top priority, it is of paramount importance for [the airport] as a major international aviation hub to resume transfer/transit services. We have been working closely with the Government, airlines and our business partners to put in place a set of comprehensive measures to ensure a smooth resumption of [these] services and a safe end-to-end journey for passengers.”

Last year, the hub welcomed more than 71 million people through its doors, equating to 420,000 aircraft movements.
