Incredible air show marks Battle of Britain

On September 26 2020, Aero Legends hosted the Battle of Britain Air Show at the Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent, and Key.Aero could not resist the opportunity for some close-up Spitfire action. It would be the last show of a season that’s been virtually wiped out by Covid, with many
of the heritage sights across Britain having had no other option than to cancel their shows honouring the few, including the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. Aero Legends, however, pressed forward with the event by enforcing strict social distancing measures.

At the start of the event, a minute’s silence was held for the fallen. Guests remained in their dedicated booked areas in order to socially distance appropriately. After this, visitors were treated to an array of displays. Unfortunately, due to the weather a number of the planned displays were unable to go ahead. Despite the blustery weather, however, four displays went ahead as part of the commemoration.

To begin, the Stampe Display Team and Aero Legends Tiger Moth Balbo wowed audiences with their daring moves. Next came two C-47s, roaring gracefully through the sky in a rare formation - the only time spectators will be able to see them fly in such a way for the rest of 2020. The pinnacle of the event came with the mock dog fight between an Me109/Buchon and the aerodrome’s own Spitfires. Visitors were able to imagine they were witnessing the real thing as the fighters spiralled through the sky, with special smoke affects emulating the real ammunition and damage.

The day was rounded off with a display incorporating all of the aircraft that had flown throughout the day. Despite the weather, the event was a fitting commemoration and tribute to the few. Many expressed their delight at being able to celebrate the anniversary in such a well organised and thought out event.
