The Indian Government has issued a letter of request to the US Government covering the purchase of six Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, local sources reported in late February. The helicopters will be operated by the Indian Army and are in addition to 22 Apaches ordered for the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 2015.
The move is considered a victory for the Army, as it has been arguing for an attack helicopter capability, against IAF wishes, for some time. The Indian Army has a requirement for up to 39 Apaches.
