It was a major feat of engineering – man against the sea – but Kansai International Airport now occupies reclaimed land, proudly bearing the title, ‘mother of all offshore airports’ Sebastian Schmitz reports.

One of the youngest airports in Japan, Kansai Airport serves not only the city of Osaka but the entire region. Based in the southwestern part of Japan’s main island, Honshu, the world’s first major offshore airport set a trend for new airports – especially in areas like Japan that have dense population, little space or challenging terrain – building in the open sea.
