NEW YORK Governor Andrew Cuomo has unveiled a vision to redevelop John F Kennedy International Airport, following on from a project he announced two years ago to transform LaGuardia Airport (Airports of the World, Nov-Dec 2015, Issue 62, p56-57).
His JFK plan focuses on three core elements:
A unified, interconnected airport layout: The newer terminals will be expanded and older buildings redeveloped and relocated to ease connections. The current web of access roads will be redeveloped to lead into a ring road for easier access to each of the facilities, with centralised car parking created within the ring road.
Improved road access: The New York State Department of Transportation will address bottlenecks at Kew Gardens Interchange and on the Van Wyck Expressway to improve journeys from and to the city, which currently take between 35 minutes and two hours.
