Airliner World correspondent Tamás Martényi reports on the spectacular restoration of the first Soviet-built tri-jet to have entered service with former flag carrier, Malév Hungarian Airlines.
The Tupolev Tu-154 is one of the best known and most popular airliners produced by the former Soviet Union (see Airliner World, March 2018). Last year brought a significant double anniversary for the type: it was 50 years since the Tu-154 prototype made its maiden flight and 45 years since former Hungarian flag carrier Malév took delivery of its first example. Eager to celebrate both events in style, Hungary’s Aviation Cultural Centre embarked on an ambitious project to restore the first Tu-154 to join the national airline’s fleet to its former glory.
