F-35A serial 79-8705 operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s 302 Hikotai crashed while conducting training with three other Lightning IIs on April 9. The fighter went down in the Pacific Ocean around 84 miles (135km) east of Misawa Air Base on Honshu, and the pilot was killed.
