-A BA B747 lost all four engines while flying inside an Ash cloud around Jakarta - read here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_9
The volcanic ash abraded the outside surfaces of the aircraft, including the windscreen, and melted inside the combustion chambers of the B747, and coated the inside. It also contaminated the fuel through pressurisation ducts!
Members of the public can gain access to Met Office advisories (neat graphics of actual/forecast ash cloud coverage at different FLs!) here:

-Saw the episode on National Geographic once.
The captain must have done the understatement of the century when he announced they had lost all engines.

-Sky are reporting no flights in or out of Manchester until 1pm.
Manchester Airport arr/dep screen makes grim reading ,I would say 90+% of flights canx.
A god day to go to bed after a night shift

-My mate was due to fly to Heathrow this morning to catch a Trans-Pond flight to the states.
He even bought himself train tickets to Heathrow in case BA were on strike. But as there is no Trans-Pond Traffic at all, he's stuffed either way.
Needless to say he's not happy! He has been planning his trip for 18 months! Poor sod.

Mon Apr 12, 11:30 am ETREYKJAVIK, Iceland – Iceland's latest volcanic eruption is coming to an end, scientists said Monday — and the unexpected tourist boom that lifted this recession-weary country's financial fortunes may be up in smoke as well.

-Thanks for that link cockerhoop. I wondered if there was anything like that on the net. I have an app for I-PHONE but this is much clearer.
It sure is looking quiet up there. Are we likely to see any effects from this on the ground? i.e cars coated in soot and so on.

-This went up on the NATS website half an hour ago:
Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Thurs April 15, 09:30
From midday today until at least 6pm, there will be no flights permitted in UK controlled airspace other than emergency situations. This has been applied in accordance with international civil aviation policy. We continue to monitor the situation with the Met Office and work closely with airline customers and adjoining countries.

Problems for air traffic over Iceland and Northern Norway. Everything closed.
Tabloids are saying it's a possibility airspace as far down as Oslo will be closed by tomorrow at noon. I sure hope not, as my wife is flying in to OSL from TLV via Prague tomorrow. What are the chances of this cloud of ash cause huge problems?
