An Air Service Berlin Douglas C-47 Skytrain, registration D-CXXX performing a sight seeing flight from Berlin Schoenefeld to Berlin Schoenefeld (Germany) with 25 passengers and 3 crew, departed Schoenefeld's runway 25 (former 25L) when the left hand engine failed. The airplane struggled to climb out, after a left hand turn the crew set the airplane down into a grassy field near Selchow and the building site of the new runway (which is planned to turn Schoenefeld into Berlin Brandenburg International Airport). 7 occupants received minor injuries, the airplane sustained substantial damage and is thought to be a write off.

The airport was closed for about 15 minutes due to lack of coverage by emergency services, who deployed to the accident site.

The Douglas C-47 Skytrain became famous as "Rosinenbomber" (raisin bomber or candy bomber) during the Berlin Blockade (1948-1949), when the aircraft - amongst other aircraft types - formed the backbone of the Berlin Airlift operation which managed to supply the western part of the city of Berlin over a period of a year. Starting out at 750 tons per day the Berlin Airlift managed to carry 12800 tons of goods in 1350 flights into the city every day during the later stages of the operation, every 90 seconds a raisin bomber took off or landed. The Airlift prompted a special affiliation of Berlin residents with the aircraft and Berlin Tempelhof, one of the main airports of that operation. Berlin Tempelhof was closed in 2008, D-CXXX was the last aircraft (in formation with a "Tante Ju" Junkers 52) to officially depart Berlin Tempelhof, see: Fare Well, Berlin Tempelhof .
