-Nice shots of some rare planes. Is the plane on the left in the third shot, a Carvair? If it is the open door suggests it's still in service?

-Wicked shots there. They are really good.
mmitch-It may have an open door but look at all the planes around it, they all have engines missing or propellers missing. There is also a hole in the centre of the fueselage

You'll find that "hole" to be an escape hatch ;) Possibly opened to help ventilate the aircraft due to the heat LN-MOW mentioned.
Just because the other planes around it are missing parts, does not mean IT or they are out of service. They could all be in for maintenance for example.
Take a look at maintenance ramps at Sharjah. Lots of planes with engines and rudders off of them... all in for maintenance.

-But AFAIK, there aren't any Carvair's in operation.

I know that.
There isn't anything in that photo that either confirms it is in operation or it isn't. That my point :)
Alaska is known as a haven for older planes. Plenty DC-6's doing the rounds there.

OK, after the Corfu debacle, lets straighten this one out too!
To the best of my knowledge, Roger Brooks' Carvair isn't currently flying but its airworthy. However, even though the Fairbanks based Carvair may not be flying now, the compaany expects to fly it on a fairly regular basis in future - they bought it a year or two ago and have been tidying it up since.
There is one Carvair flying very regularly at present - N89FA is actually based at Sherman/Grayson County in Texas, but has recently been active out of the infamous Detroit Willow Run airport. Another airworthy Carvair, 9J-PAA, is based at Johannesburg Rand and although I believe it hasn't flown for a while Phoebus Apollo are planning to restore it to flight status any time now.
