A article in the economist mentioned that Singapore Airlines have been denied access to the lucrative sydney-LA route after pressure from Qantas on the Australian Government however the Government did say they were considering a bid from Virgin to fly from Sydney to LA and then onto London.

I think the application was made by Virgin Blue for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to LAX

Virgin are currently looking at SYD basings for VS A340 pilots and already have a VS cabin crew base there which is about to expand. What they plan to do with it...who knows!

Howdy, Someone has to enter this market; the fares from the US to Australia are ridiculously high. Bill

Ridiculously high is putting it lightly. I've been flying on this route for 7 years, and the last 2 have seen the fare skyrocket, espcially during Christmas (unfortunately, this is when I typically go). However, UA and NZ just put out some fares last week that saw a round trip LAX-SYD ticket cost $730US after taxes for travel between now and March 31st. That's dirt cheap, but I can't go this time of year. That's about 1/3 of what I paid for my trip in December.
