TAIPEI - Taiwan's aviation authorities are looking into an incident yesterday in which a Singapore Airlines jet knocked over some equipment while taxiing through a parking bay instead of the designated taxiway before takeoff.

A wing panel of the aircraft was damaged slightly, but it took off safely and arrived in Singapore about four hours later.

It had 22 crew members and 366 passengers on board.

The airline said the flight crew of SQ 29 had 'inadvertently passed through a parking bay instead of the designated taxiway'.

In a statement, it said the pilots 'acknowledged to the control tower that it had passed through the bay instead of the taxiway, and continued taxiing to the runway'.

Seven minutes after takeoff, the Taiwan air-traffic controllers informed the captain that two tailstands had been knocked down at the parking bay.

Tailstands are 6-m-high jacks used to support the tail-end of an aircraft while cargo is being loaded or unloaded.

'After conducting checks in-flight, the captain found no abnormalities with the aircraft's performance and decided to continue to Singapore,' the airline said.

The aircraft was inspected on arrival and minor damage was found on a wing panel.

It is understood that Taiwan airport authorities sent a circular to airlines recently, saying that some aircraft had turned mistakenly into parking bays near taxiway S5 - the one designated for the SIA plane yesterday - and advising the airlines to take care.

SIA said yesterday that an investigation into the incident by its flight-operations management as well as investigators from the Ministry of Transport was contin- uing.

Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council chief Yong Kay said his agency had studied an assessment of the incident by Singapore's civil aviation authority, classified it as minor and turned the investigation over to the Civil Aeronautics Administration.

The incident yesterday occurred nearly two years after a wrong turn by the crew of Flight SQ 006 led to a crash that killed 83 people.

RE: SIA makes wrong turn at Taipei AGAIN !!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-07-02 AT 12:37 PM (GMT)]Another accident at Chiang Kai Shek Airport!!!
In the SQ 6 crash in late 2001, Taiwanese airport controllers failed to alert the pilots that they were on the wrong runway and cleared them for takeoff. Runway markings were confusing and runway lights were suspected to be lighted eventhough the runway was closed.
In this accident and a few similar ones earlier, airliners had turned mistakenly into parking bays near taxiway S5. This showed that there are serious design flaws in the airport. Already an SIA and Taiwan Airlines planes have become victims of the airport. They should replace the airport with a new one asap.

There is nothing wrong with CKS airport, there was a NOTAM issused to Pilots, which alerts them to the fact that A/C have been taxiing through parking bays,Maybe the pilots need to be a little more vigalent,The 2000 Accident was pilot, weather and traffic control's fault.

Last time I checked, building a new airport isn't cheap. Just because a few pilots made wrong turns, doesn't warrant throwing out a few hundred million to build a new airport.

Lots of money is needed to build one. However, isn't it better to spend the money than to get more accidents at the airport? If CKS airport is so dangerous, airlines will stop flying there. Another solution is to upgrade the airport with ground radar or just make it safer(runway markings clearer etc). It is an SIA pilot who wrote a letter to the Taiwan Aiport autorities, telling them that there were confusing runway markings which may misled pilots to turn into parking bays near taxiway S5. Thereafter, Taiwan Airport Autorities sent the circular to airlines.

Why do you want to build a new airport.....why dont try improving the existing one so that things like these can be avoided, one accident doesent prompts the govt. to make a whole airport.
