'Day Trips' from your Local Airport

With it being Summer, I find myself eager to fly as often as possible and usually go on 'day trips' from my local, Bournemouth Airport, with Ryanair.

I have previously flown to Glasgow and Dublin return on the same day, which is ideal as it is cheap and gives enough time to stroll around great cities.

However I see that there are no day return (e.g. depart AM return PM) from BOH even though, I believe, they have two FR aircraft based here. Southampton is an option, but taxes and charges are extraordinary there.

I was wondering if many others too go on day trips and if they have any tips or stories. What city would you most recommend visiting and if there is any website out there, like skyscanner.com, that specialise on day trips?

:DThanks, all comments welcome and greatly appreciated ;)

Hi,

I have used FR a few times for day trips from Leeds/Bradford to Dublin, also, BMI from MAN to Belfast..

Belfast is a nice city to visit for a few hours..

I have done a countless number of day trips with Andrew (A330Crazy) from this very forum. We've been to Dublin many times with both Ryanair and Aer Lingus, Zürich with Swiss, Manchester with British Airways, Glasgow with bmi, Malta and Gibraltar with easyJet etc. Not every trip has been to watch aircraft though but instead spending a few hours walking around some of the cities.

I'm not sure I could manage a day in Malta or Gibraltar again though. From leaving the house to getting back home again was almost 24 hours both times!

I have done Amsterdam from Southampton as a day trip (weekdays only though) Also did Dusseldorf from SOU a couple of years ago as well. Am sure other destinations are available if you look at the flybe website.

A few years a go I did a day trip from Luton to Iceland. The aircraft was a 747 and I think the airline was Air Atlanta Icelandic. Take off was at 07.00 and we landed back at Luton about 23.30. There were two flights per week, but I don't think it operates now.

The visit consisted of a coach tour around the Keflavik and Rekjavik area, with various stops including the Blue Lagoon, plus a boat trip to spot whales (there weren't any).

A fantastic day out!

As Michael said, we've done loads in the past.

This year alone I have the following booked.

June (Taken) LGW-MUC with Aer Lingus

July - (Tomorrow 11th) STN-BHD with Ryanair
(23rd) LGW-DUS with Flybe

August - (8th) STN-TRF with Ryanair

September - (5th) STN-ORK with Ryanair
(19th) LGW-DUB with Ryanair
(26th) LGW-BCN with EasyJet

But as said in the past we have visited places all over Europe with ease - Including Prague with SkyEurope before things went **** up for them.

Wow that sounds really good, I imagine people living within a reasonable distance from key low cost airports i.e LBA, LGW/LTN/STN, BRS etc.

I know that Palmair, Bournemouth's 'local' airline, used to provide day trips to places like Jersey and Lake Garda but there are non going, and though Ryanair operate regularly from the Airport, there are no return day flights.

Im considering going back to DUB, however departing from LHR and returning into BOH, its an option. I need my monthly 'kick' of flying!

A330 Crazy, have an awesome time tomorrow in Belfast :)

I can totaly relate to your love of the "day flying trip". Living smack bang in the middle of MAN and LBA i have had lots of these kind of trips. I love hunting out the possible routings and finding reasonable fares as much as the flying. Must be some kind of puzzle solving thing i got going on. Obviously its dependent on how well served your local is, but a very early start and a late finnish can see you squeeze in 4 to 5 flights in a day and maybe even 6 if your willing to risk cutting your connection times to scary levels bouncing around Europe all day. I know some people will say "whats the point in going someplace and not even getting out of the airport" but this is where i get my kicks in the Aviation world. Happy future travels man, you never know, you might just get hooked onto this type of flying.

*ALLIANCE- thanks for the message, its given me a plan. I never before thought into flying to more than one destination and returning the same day. I always admired aviation enthusiasts who'd do that, since as well as spending the day in the best place you could be (flying at 30.000 ft) you manage to see differant destinations in one day.

I've taken you're advice and am considering flying BOH-DUB-EDI-BOH. Im a beginner at this multi-leg day trip so ill take it slow :p

No worries lucas. If you need help with multi-segment trips feel free to PM me with any questions. It does become addictive, trying to get routes into airports you have never flown into, aircraft or airlines you have never flown on. Before you know where you are your not just looking at Europe but the whole world, and these "day trips" start to become week long adventures.

Oh yes, Prague as well. Not sure how I managed to forget that one, especially after such enjoyable flights. SkyEurope is probably one of the best low cost carriers I have ever flown with.
