-LHR - An A300 Airbus in 'prototype' Air France livery crosses the hedge of 28L. The peritrack at Hatton Cross had spectators stopping on the side of the road to watch which is why there are cars parked. At this time there was no bus/underground station 1979.
Hi VeeOne,
Very interesting picture here, this is in fact the very road that I drive up/down each and every day when I come and go to work...
Just one observation though, you say in your title above that there was no bus/underground station back in 1979, but in the background of the photo, there is what clearly looks to be like the Hatton Cross bus/tube station building...(look closely enough and you can see the bus/underground symbol, just above the blue/grey car parked on the side of the road!)?
According to Wikipedia, Hatton Cross station opened in 1975 as a terminus, and became a through station in 1977 because that is when Heathrow Central (what is now Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3) opened.;)

-I like pics like these, its probably how many of us remember those days out at our favourite airport. Its just like being on 'that' rooftop again. Love that DC6:)

How did I miss that huge building?? Dumb or what?
I was going by memory which is clearly fading on me with time. Oh dear!
I remember that part of the airport when it didn't have any buildings there but I guess that was the early 1970s when the junction was not a mass or roundabouts and confusion. :)

-Good afternoon,
As the title of this topic doesn't restrict the subject to UK airports, I have taken the liberty to post one of Schiphol airport. It was taken at August 27th, 1966 (OE-LHT in the foreground)
Kind regards,
Peter

-Thanks Peter
Has anyone noticed the vehicles in 1960s photos? Sometimes they look really old but the aeroplanes don't have the same aged look. The BEA bus in Peter's photo looks old to me. If you see photos of the BEA and BOAC vehicles in 1960s airport photos at London Airport they look like 1950s designs too. Maybe this indicates just how far back our nostalgia is taking us?

-Think the French cars on the left (Renault R4L and Renault 16) must have stopped to see the French aircraft (Airbus 300) passing overhead. When did you last see a Renault R16??

That's the old Schiphol East Terminal isn't it?...Had KLM already moved into the present terminal before the other operators?

-Good morning Longshot,
Yes, the photo was taken at Schiphol-East, and no, KLM hadn't moved at that time. The new facilities opened in 1967. It ís just a coincidence that there isn't a single KLM aircraft visible in this photo.
Kind regards,
Peter

Hello Mike,
Thanks for the compliment. No, Austrian had two 748s, OE-LHS (c/n 1589, became G-AXVG) and OE-LHT (c/n 1590, became RP-C1028)
Kind regards,
Peter

Very interesting photographs! I think the Vanguards are ex-Air Canada airliners. I saw one in Air Canada livery at Southend in 1972. Love the Carvairs.
Sad to see the BEA Vanguard being dismembered at BEA Maintenance. Nice photo though, longshot.

Here is an 'arty' photo I took in the 1970s - I wish I'd widened the view! This is an Air France A300, a Libyan 727 and an Icelandair 727-100...

Retro airport scenes
Does anyone else have old pictures of scenes at UK airports? I would love to see more of this type of photo. Anyone???
Most photographers took/take pictures of a single aeroplane but after a bit of nostalgia these more general photos work for me.
LHR - Delta stands at Heathrow in 1977 with a TAT F-27, Air Algerie and Iberia 727s and SAS DC-9. Behind a British Airways 707 heading for 28R. 1978
LHR - British Airways Trident 2 and BMA Viscount with a BA One-Eleven. The Ghana Airways VC-10 in final livery rolls on 28R - 1979
