I know there are some great Spitfire sims avaliable as add ons for flight simulator 2002 and 2004. However, I have neither of these. Does anyone know if there are any good Spitfire sims around that are 'stand alone' programs, rather than add ons?

As far as I know there are no stand alone 'Spitfire only' sims. Some combat sims include the Spit as a default aircraft. 'Battle of Britain 2' being one obvious choice. The IL2 series also includes Spit/Seafire variants. The same team who produced IL2/Pacific Fighters are working on a Battle Of Britain sim at the moment. However if you're interested more in flying a realistic Spitfire sim for the sake of flying rather than for combat, you really ought to reconsider FS2004. There are several decent Spitfire models, including the awesome Real Air Spitfire 14.

Thanks for the info. Do you know how the Real Air Spitfire compares with the Just Flight 'Spitfire' add on for FS2004, which looks pretty good too?

The 'Just Flight' Spitfire package is actually produced by Aeroplane Heaven (www.aeroplaneheaven.com) 'Just Flight' are only really the publishers of the CD package, the aircraft contained in it are available as download products as well. It's difficult to give a direct comparison between the Real Air Spit and the AH Package because they take different approaches. Most if not all of the Spitfire versions are modelled in the AH package and they can be purchased/downloaded in seperate packages if you buy online. The quality is very good. If you want to sample AH's quality they have several free downloads on the website including a Seafire and the superb Hurricane released just a few weeks ago. The Real Air version models just the 'high back' Mk14, although 'clipped' and 'unclipped' winged versions are included. There is also a model with a contra-rotating prop. There is no real 2d panel as the aircraft is desgned to be flown for the 3d 'Virtual Cockpit. I n my opinion Real Air aircraft are among the best add ons available for flight sim. Everything Real Air do appears to be produced to perfection. The 3d model of the aircraft is excellent, frame rate friendly and nicely animated. The sounds are wonderfull and textures are beautifully done. Real Air are particularly well known for the quality of the guages, which are exceptionally smooth. The flight model however stand above anything else. Real Air are the only company that produce add on aircraft that stall, slip and spin properly in Flight Sim. This is the clincher for me. The aircraft feels like I would imagine a Spit to fly, and that's what it's all about for me ! My only niggle ? I wish they'd done a Merlin powerd version, but thats personal taste. Personally if I was to recommend one over the other I would have to recommend Real Air. That's not to say the AH aircraft are poor, on the contrary they are excellent, but Real Air are better still !
