One local paper is reporting online that a swift glider (Guy Westgate?) crashed landed late this morning. Pilot is reported to have got out before the emergency services arrived and then taken to hospital. Hopefully no serious injury.

Pilot got himself out of the wreckage and was taken away to Worthing Hospital. They reported that he is in good spirits but had injured his back, Sounds like nothing serious.

It was a nasty thing to see for sure just glad in the end he was OK.
By the way it was not Guy Westgate he was flying one of the Twisters today.

Stunning (literally) pictures here. He wasn't wearing a helmet nor using headphones by the looks of things.

Not common in ordinary gliders.

Thanks for the link.

Are you required to ware helmet in gliders?
I am one in US, and never was told to ware one.

As to head set, might have been flung off on impact.

As to accident:
Frightening crash!
Unlucky he hit runway and not turf.
See in image 2 the fuselage is already buckling, right at "Besam" word.

Still, glad he is pretty much OK, just a very sore back for a few months.
Could have been worse!

I've never heard about any requirement to wear a helmet when flying gliders.

A headset may be preferable when flying a motor glider, especially due to the noise if nothing else. A built-in loudspeaker and microphone generally seem to do the trick in unpowered gliders.

In the US you are required to wear fire retardent overalls as normally, a glider landing heavy - will explode into a huge fireball two or three times, then at least once in slow motion............:p

Anyone know how Mike Newman is getting on? Has he recovered from his back injuries?

Viewing the pictures, it's amazing he didn't brake his back! Nasty accident.
