North Weald access

Just got back from a trip around Essex including a visit (or rather an attempted visit) to North Weald. I was driving around the peri-track to get to the hangars near to the M11 when I was confronted by a notice that read 'Access only to authorised persons' or something of the sort. I haven't seen this before at North Weald, but then I don't visit too often. Has the airfield turned against the enthusiast community? Regards

Orion "Has the airfield turned against the enthusiast community?" No,enthusiasts are welcome, but you must ask either at the Squadron or at Weald Aviation before walking around their area`s G-ANPK (North Weald ground crew)

Yes I can understand that, but the problem is that the notice is before you get to the Squadron or Weald Aviation areas! A bit of a Catch 22: perhaps there is a need for a phone call first. Regards

Orion I think that the notice`s are there to stop you going onto the active area`s and not to stop you going around the perri track,i`ll have a look next time i`m overthere, and bring it up with the powers that be.We don`t want to turn away any buisness from the Squadron, even if it is only a cup of tee !! The Airfield welcomes visitors. If you are not sure where you are going, stop at the main gate for a map and briefing. What most people don't realise is that once you pass the runway threshold onto liveside your car insurance is void. if you have an incident with an aircraft, that could be very expensive indeed. The signs are partly to stop market visitors from trying to exit the Airfield via the runways (which has happened). Some areas are privately leased, and the owners/operators don't want people wandering around on their aprons unannounced and without permission. Unfortunately a few people regard having an interest in aviation as a permit to go anywhere. Phone or e-mail the hangars beforehand. The destination for almost all visitors is The Squadron. On a busy day it is a great place to be. All we ask is that you exercise care and common sense. No big deal really!

Thank you for this post and the advice ie 'exercise care and common sense'. Always good advice on an airfield! It is always my practice to ask permission to take stills or movies, seems to be just good manners, although there is a caveat in that there has to be a person around to get the permission from. Anyway, thanks for the post and I'll pop in next time I'm on a mission to Essex. Regards

I asked the tower for this shot, always good to keep a high vis in the car too. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc143/Gingie28/north%20weald/DSCF7393.jpg

If anyone is visiting and would like to go up the Tower, again ask at the main gate, we can normally accommodate this.
