Preparing the Aircraft Commander for the 21st Century Monitoring - What are we doing about it? London, 19 - 20 March 2013 Aviation is arguably the most regulated and structured activity in common use today. Definitions abound, from how to refuel an aircraft to how to enter waypoints in a flight management computer; from the details of the multi-crew pilot licence, to the ground lighting required for a Category III automatic landing: And everything in between. Some things, however, seem to be taken at face value, with the assumption that they are perfectly understood: innate, and therefore not requiring explanation. One of those things is monitoring. At this two day conference we will address the subject of monitoring and in doing so will start by asking the question, 'What is monitoring and what are we doing about it?' We will attempt to identify what is often talked about but rarely described in a way that can form the basis of successful training.
