I have been looking to this since 2007...to build a self designed really low cost aeroplane in a garage environment ( or in a bedroom ).

Kinda like a Colditz glider with an engine ( simple and very inexpensive ).

Evans Volksplane was a bit what I am after; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evans_VP-1_Volksplane

Yet I'd like to make it a lot smaller like a QUICKIE size.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutan_Quickie

So far I have developed a foil that delivers 15% better L/D in 2D than any other airfoil.

I am also developing a wood composite to make it strong and lite. Pine based composite is 1440 kg/m3 dense ( spesific gravity 1.44 ).

Do you have a similar endeavour in mind ?

I am addressing the EU:s class of under 70 KG aeroplane that can be flown without a lisence and also the US FAR Part 103 class that also ia very loose when it comes to pilot training.

But the aeroplane is very slow only 24 kts stall and 100 km/h top speed to be inside these limitations. Also electric ( possibly solar assisted ) with only 10 kW engine.

I actually just modified this old Hippiäinen design; http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?129479-What-is-the-minimum-instrumentation-in-a-hyperlite&highlight=hippi%E4inen

Did I manage to get it into better or worse direction ?

Which do you prefer ? I want to hear comments.

It seems to be here too ( the Hippiäinen ); http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?116333-If-I-only-had-a-crystal-ball-!&highlight=hippi%E4inen

So far 3 people have shown interest if the kit price is below 10 000 €.

Are you interested ? I have two gentlemen working with me on this. Other is a pilot for parachute carrying Cessna and the other has two wooden sailplanes ( KA-6 and Vasama Pik-16 ).

Is it ok looking ?

Here are the wings also ( might interest some aviators ) !

Do you want to preorder your kit now ( prize is at 10 000 euros ) ?

:D

Hippiäinen is Gold Crest ( bird ) in finnish ( Europe's smallest bird ).

I bought the gfirst wheels for it...915 gramms each ( 2 lbs )...and thus the pants on them.

Interested yet ?

Wheels are 4 £ a piece. Tail wheel a roller skate one.

I am still struggling to get funding to manufacture a press to produce the spars etc from pinewood.

The wood composite is almost kevlar strength and weight ( 1,37 spesific gravity ).

Much hasn't happened since I have been working and inventing other stuff like moose resistent electric car with 1000 km range, vertical axis windmill, twin engine high flying solar powered research aeroplane just to mention few.

I started doing, after having made 50 odd compressed laminate composite planks, air foils with the stuff.

It is hard, durable and very easy to work with.

------

I am going to widen the forward fuselage to get a good amount of movement for the stick...also the wing will be simpler....a lot simpler.

Really interesting. Thanks for the updates

That is a very high-lift aerofoil section, and very long wings too, like a motor glider.

Yes thanks Propstrike !

The AR is high but plane is very small.
The L/D for the foil at Re 4M is beyond 210 !

It will be a bit more boxy from now on.

More room for stick inside and legs.

Strakes also simplified the wing...which was bugging me.

Good day Silver Fox !

Somewhat surprised of your comment, but very thankful.

I usually get banned for posting my planes on finnish sites.

I just try to show that flying electric with 1/10th power of the "normal" planes is possible.

I am convinced that I can save the world by doing this.

best regards,

Mr topspeed has indeed been banned from just about every Finnish aviation forum because of his trends of discussing with himself, on matters that no one else is actually interested in. Or if someone is, it is clear that Mr t has not understood that "designing" airplanes is different from just drawing profiles of them.

Are you saying 3D modelling would be better way to design world class aeroplanes outa woodcomposite ?

See I have first learned to use XFRL-5 and made the greatest airfoil so far created then made 1 year work to develope woodcomposite 70% stronger than aluminium and ½ as heavy.

Then just 6 years looking for the right concept.

Who says how fast you have to build them ?

Here is the 1/3 scale inboard section for the model wing.

Keep going Topspeed !

You have a rather enviable and endearing, innocent naivety.

Indeed, like on a different forum a moderator told me that Mr t is slightly "reality challenged"...:)

Indeed, like on a different forum a moderator told me that Mr t is slightly "reality challenged"...:)

You could also claim that the moderator could be a bit too earth bound...if you know what I mean ( not necessarily a retard ). All moderators bann you if you cause too many complaints from the other forum goers. I unfortunately back up my theories and views with solid facts and some have hard time to say they were wrong.

Anyway I can confess that I did use the finnish site in the beginning as a test bed to sorta test my ideas with the readers..and I did learn a lot about aviation in two megathreads that are still there.

The well under 70 kg plane would be also the lightest motorized aeroplane to fly...at least on electric engine.

I think 54 kg is the lightest so far.

Sales could be good too as the plane can be sold in the gategory that needs no lisence to fly.

It is a heavy contest in aeroplanes in Finland...I applied twice funding for this in 2014 and did not get any.

I did get the funding in 2010 ( for previous model ) but I was asked to work as a representative for a well known stone house brand ( which lasted to 2011 ). Also the low wing without a pilot lisence would have been for most too difficult to fly. There is heavy liability and insurance costs are high in this business. I had iterated all pieces of the aeroplane and the judge who valued the design for the board later started a plane company that uses a slightly similar veneer+foam+veneer structure I had on it.

I am in process of taking this woodcomposite study into main university in Helsinki/Espoo and get my doctorate in aviation in the process.

I am too often labelled as a nut case like the great aviator mr Päätalo from the same city...this cannot be a good thing if you run a major aviation company in the future. :eagerness:

I recently also designed a concept for an electric car with 1000 km range which used the know phenomena called " inverted pressure gradient matching " to get 20-30% lower drag along with structure that would have saved few hundred kilos in weight.

I take the reality challenged as a compliment as I am far a head of my time...as are all the great inventors...I wouldn't like it any other way !

----

I was taken for a fool with my high flying solar/electric hybrid all the way until I was able to prove that low wing loading and adequate but yet low out put aeroplane actually had better changes/combined ratio than U-2 jet spy plane.

This project is top secret at the moment. It will proceed after this smaller project is ready.

After my recent 1 month bann ( due to claim of a 1000 km range electric car ) I have been a bit reluctant to comment, but here goes.

50 kg everyman aeroplane tuned.

This needs no lisence to fly nor in Europe or in the USA ( if built ).

It is a high wing ( cantilever ) monoplane now.

It should cost about half of an AFFORDAPLANE.

Based on my 1.43 SG wood composite .

14% tougher than any wood in the wild and 4% tougher than Duramold by Howard Hughes and Virginus Clark.

Duramold was studied to be 80% stronger in the same volume as aluminium.
