India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) and partner Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) are negotiating with the US government to sell 10 Dhruv advanced light helicopters (ALHs) for use by US Customs.

The Indian Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently certified the civil variant of the multirole Dhruv powered by the French Turbomeca TM 333-2M2 engine, and the company hopes to have FAA certification soon. The domestic market for the Dhruv has not met the company’s expectations, with only one civil sale. However, 20 military versions have been sold to the Indian military and coast guard, with an expected order for an additional 50 of the machines in the pipeline.
