Squasher,

The original question: "The Mig-15 had a strong resemblance to which WW2 Kurt Tank design?"

The answer: The Ta-183.

The IA-33 was a post-war project developed & designed in Argentina by Tank and others to fit the centrifugal Nene turbojet engine. The fact that the Mig-15 was flying before work had started on the IA.33 would again suggest that German design had influenced the Soviets right after the war.

RE: Military Quiz - No.2

The defeat of the Russians by the Japanese at Port Arthur was significant because it was the first time a "European power" had been defeated by an Eastern power.

A Quiz! Goodie!!!

Here's my try...

1. The German invasion of Russia in WW2 was originally planned for when? And why was it delayed?
Operation Barbarossa was planned for the 15th of May 1941, but it was delayed to June because of the March 27th pro-allied coup d’etat in Yugoslavia that forced Hitler to invade Yugoslavia before invading Greece.

2. Allied planes there were captured and tested by the Germans in WW2 were often painted in what colour on the undersides?
Yellow

3. Name four major differences between the Mig-29A and Mig-29M.
Enlarged spine, Fly-by-Wire FCS, N-010 radar, 33% increase in internal fuel capacity

3. The Mig-15 had a strong resemblance to which WW2 Kurt Tank design?
The Ta 183 'Huckbein'

4. The Battle of Marathon in 490 BC was fought between whom?
mmm…tough one, I think the Greeks and Persians?

5. May 30 - April 1 1904 was significant for the Japanese army, why?
Start of the assault on Port Arthur during the Russian-Japanese War

7. Who was Napoleon’s “dear child of victory”?
Marechal André Massena…Grrr, the scourge of Portugal!

8. Name one of the objective city/town centres that the Allies failed to capture on D-DAY in 1944?
Port-en-Bessin

9. The F-22 had three unofficial names used during its prototype development, what were they?
Lightning II, Rapier, Raptor (don´t know if this one counts but sorry, don´t know more…ATF?)

10. The Japanese G4M BETTY bombers that carried the Japanese surrender delegation off shore were painted in what scheme?
Overall white with green crosses in six positions (instead of the hinomarus)

How did I do?

You did very well, got them all except the third name for the F-22 was one that the Pentagon wanted to use and that was 'Superstar'.

(p.s. from now on all answers should be e-mailed to me, as to give many others a crack at it without revealing the answers.) :)
