The death of probably the finest scrum half ever to wear the No.9 shirt has just occurred. For non rugger supporters, Joost played for the South African Springboks and made his name as an extraordinarily powerful and agile player able to control a game as both Captain of the 'Boks and team member.

He was smart, savvy and took no prisoners. He was truly outstanding and I mourn his demise. He contracted that awful and deadly scourge, motor neurone disease at an early age having played for South Africa last in 2003.

I wrote to him in South Africa about three years ago and received by return a chatty and friendly reply which I cherish.

A great sportsman. RIP
