At least everyone got down ok,no further harm to the aircraft.

The Facebook message states that the wingtip was 'compromised'. That doesn't necessarily mean that they lost it.

As a Life Member of Canadian Warplane Heritage, I would like to clarify before all the rumors start.
The Lanc DID NOT lose a wingtip in flight
The lower right wing tip attachment bracket loosened allowing the outer wing tip to move in flight. However, the wing tip remained attached for the duration of the flight.
The aircraft returned safely to the Museum with no further issues.

The below was just sent to me by CWH with the request that I post in here in the forum

"Thank you for the many kind comments on the safe landing of our Lancaster yesterday. Flying VR-A was our senior Lancaster pilot, Don Schofield, who has almost 800 hours of flying time on our Lancaster, and a total of 26,000 hours in his career.

In discussions with the Transportation Safety Board, we have proceeded with our internal investigation of the occurrence. Our preliminary examination indicates the outer right wing tip lower attachment bracket failed which allowed the outer wing tip to move in flight. At the present time, further examination to determine mode of failure of this bracket, the proper repair scheme and new inspection criteria for both outer wing tip attachments is ongoing. We have already shared all of our findings with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Our target date for returning our Lancaster to the skies is for the Hamilton Airshow on June 16 & 17."

I'd rather not.......

Probably looks worse than is, isn't the tip removable, so the lower brackets have failed allowing the airflow to bend the upper brackets and the tip up and over, you may find damage to the tip and wing is localised to the attachments.

Two months before it flies again? So that's a couple of days to actually fix the wing tip & 58 days filling out paperwork..

2 months i could well believe. the outer skin on both wings may need removing/replacing and repainting also as well as replacement of the other tip. both items may also have to be constructed from new or replacement items stripped, modified, inspected and repainted also.. its not the usual wear and tear item you would have on the shelf.. so besides the paperwork there is probably a lot of work to be done on the aircraft which is a bit of a shame becouse the show season is here. at least she`s in one piece though

I would guess finding out why it happened and how to stop it happening again will take time.
