I never new the Americans flew these. From the Roger Freeman collection, they have it marked as a "Stinson AT-19 Reliant" LINK - http://www.americanairmuseum.com/media/9496 Anyone any more details on this. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii120/Duggy009/Duggy009-2/Westland-Lysander-ofGunnerySchoolCMarch1944.jpg Regards Duggy

I suspect it is V9817 used by 1 Gunnery and Tow Target Flight, 8th Air Force in 1944. It carried RAF markings apart from the fuselage roundels. Not sure of location though possibly Templeton as seen here - http://www.controltowers.co.uk/t-v/templeton.htm

Any clues in the background aircraft? There's a Cub, L5, or perhaps an Auster (something pretty tiny, anyway) in front of an Oxford, and a Mossie to the right... I think, makes the eyes ache looking! Adrian

Just squinting at the aircraft in the background - not sure about Mossie, maybe P38?

No familiar vertical stab to ident a Mossie...P-38 for sure.

Won't disagree... I was going by the highish wing! Mind you, having spotted the Flying Bulls P38 at Sumburgh in 2012, I should still have got it... Adrian

My initial thought was P-38 too on looking. I think Oxford and possibly L-5 for the other two aircraft

There was an article on such aircraft ten or more years ago in Scale Aircraft Modeller called Reverse Lend Lease or something like that. It prompted me to build a model of that Lysander.

Lol - I thought they only used one! Would these have been from one block of serials or just random? The aircraft in the photo certainly appears to be from the V9... range.

The photograph looks like Lysander IIIa V9817 assigned to 3rd GTTF East Wretham. The other photograph at Atcham is Lysander Mk III T1552 assigned to 1st GTTF of 495 FG. Repainted Olive Drab and Neutral Gray.

There's good mention made of USAAF Lysanders in MMP's Lysander book published a few years ago now, and authored by JDK. I can't find my copy at the moment, which is driving me bonkers, but there are several photos and at least one profile drawing of USAAF examples.

One profile of V9817 is all there is in the MMP book. No photographs.
