I'll raise a glass of 'Spitfire' tonight to the men who allow me to do just that.

Pity we can't raise a glass of 'Hurricane'. The ratio of Spitfire to Huricanes in the sobering list above shows clear how many more engaged squadrons on this day were Hurricane equipped than the more glamourous Spitfire. Thank god for Sidney Camm.

Went to my local church, where the Commonwealth War Graves are for about 20 W.W.II airmen. They were killed in training accidents, during the Battle and throuugh the rest of the war. Many were RCAF and RNZAF as well as RAF. Tragic.

Left a short note in the Church visitors book.

There are two other war memorials there; one from W.W.I, the other the motte and bailey from the last time Britain was invaded.

Planted a tree in my garden, I suppose it should have been a plane tree really.

For me, an evening of quiet contemplation...have had the pleasure of nursing a Battle of Britain veteran who sadly died a few weeks ago...his memory will live on. Not only because of the history lessons he taught me whilst on the ward (they aren't stories, I think of them as lessons) but the manner in which he conducted his life - a real gentleman.

1215hrs: London. Hurricane P2725. 504 Squadron Hendon
Sgt R.T.Holmes (Baled out after aircraft damaged by Bf109, unhurt. A/C crashed in Buckingham Palace Rd)

The same Sgt. R.T.Holmes whose Hurricane was dug up some weeks ago? He collided with a Do(2)17, cutting off its tail ... I think having read about him in Len Deightons Battle of Britain book.
