Ozplane, I flew there quite a few times as a very small P2 to my dad and other pilots but I don't recall ever using the cross runway but I guess we must have at some point. I do recall seeing an SF260 take off from it towards the game reserve and execute a very smart low level four point roll. Also there was a story about a Seneca that got very low on the approach and bounced its main gear on the roof of a school bus... I was on that bus... probably not actually, one of those stories where fact and fiction have become blurred over the intervening half century. Sorry, back to North Weald.

On the point about spitfire wrap around windscreens....I'm sure I saw an article with PT in ig saying the wrap around screen caused visual distortion on landing that's why he opted for a more conventional screen?
His ground crew said similar to me when I asked last year. There's also more protection with the current screen, in the event of a bird strike.
Apologies for the thread drift but the SF260 mentioned by Hooligan in post no 63 would have been 5Y-ALL, belonging to "Bosky" of ZB Air charters. He was well known for his aeros and despite my best efforts I was never able to charter the SF260 but had to make do with his Mooneys.

North Weald, Nairobi Wilson... ;)
I remember ZB: we flew with Aero Club of East Africa, plus Nakuru Gliding Club. PA-28s were AIB, ABO and AGK, Chipmunks KLY & KLS and at Nakuru Citabria AKK. I do recall the Mooneys and a Wren 460!

Friday 24th May: The JP and L-29 were both due to fly, so made a visit to photograph the Delfin. Sadly the sunlight was gone by the time they taxiied, and the pics were awful, so will have to try again another day. There's a replacement Air Ambulance in at the moment too, in a rather bold orange livery.
Saturday 25th May: A Westland Scout that was only recently delivered came back in to Weald for a fuel stop. I was in the wrong place for the best shots of the departure.
The local village of Fyfield hosted a Night Landing Ground as a satellite facility for 39 (Home Defence) Squadron when it was based at North Weald during World War 1. On Friday evening this was commemorated when a special plaque donated by the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust was unveiled on the village hall during the Summer BBQ evening. The Landing Ground was situated to the south west of Fyfield, set up in late 1916 and used from 1917 to 1919. It had no permanent buildings and was quite small, consisitng of just 25 acres, with a flying area of 370 x 350 yards. The plaque was unveiled by F/Lt John Hawkins after a short speech from John and the Chairman of the Parish Council, Les Lamb. The ceremony was also supported by the band and colour of 2317 (Harlow) Squadron and the colour of 414 (Epping & North Weald) Squadron of the Air Cadets.

A visit last weekend to see the L-29. Once again, no sunlight when the jet was on the move, so I'll just have to keep trying for that one. Nice to be able to lend a hand getting the Mustang back in the hangar and all bunged up, and to catch up with Peter Teichman for the first time this year.
And another visit today - hoping for a busy one as the forecast was so nice, but it was pretty slow for vintage aircraft movements, with the JP3 operating out of reach of the camera on the cross runway to accommodate a GA event being held at Weald Aviation. The Mustang was leaving the area to head to Kemble just as we arrived at the gate, so a long wait for his return around 3:30pm. Again though, a pleasure to be able to help out, this time cleaning the flies off the leading edges! Also really nice to meet some F-15 pilots (and a WSO) from Lakenheath who popped by the hangar for a look at the Mustang.

Just out of curiosity. Is anything happening at North Weald on Friday? As most of this year's Legends participants are local and not many arrivals are expected I'm not sure if I want to go there just for visiting.

We are on the fringes of the Normandy Daks event, but 'Drag-Em-Oor' went off to Headcorn on Sunday, returning in the afternoon.
The Jet Provost G-BKOU was also out on four sorties during the day.

Over the weekend we had the annual Wings & Wheels model show. This year it featured pyrotechnics, bringing back memories of the old Fighter Meets.
The Fire Crew halped to damp down the grass, which had caught fire. Not a fun job in the heat!
After the show on Saturday the Norwegian Historical Squadron T-133 Silver Star arrived from Kristiansand.
On Sunday marning the BBMF Lancaster gave us a flyby on its way the the Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park.

Nothing special that I know of, but I'm now off for seven days and out of the loop
