I've come across a reference to what must be the strangest Spitfire loss. Whilst going through my AFEE archive I found a mention of Sikorsky Hoverfly I being tested to fly a banner on a trailing steel cable (the picture shows a banner advertising an airshow at Beaulieu!).
The report mentions that in the course of the trials Spitfire NH840 struck the weight on the end of the cable - in mid air  which resulted in it being classed as Cat 5.
Anyone out there know any more details?
