A bit of a shock for someone in a high position...

From a BBC story...

The commander of Canada's largest air force base has been charged with the murder of two women and the sexual assault of two others, police said.

Col Russell Williams, 46, appeared in court a day after his arrest.
One woman was found dead in her house in November and the other was reported missing 11 days ago.

Col Williams oversaw logistical support for missions to Haiti and Afghanistan.

He was appointed commander of Base Trenton in Ontario - Canada's busiest air force hub - in July.

Colonel Russell Williams has given police a lengthy and wide-ranging statement about four dozen so-called "lingerie break-ins," two home invasions that turned into bizarre sexual assaults last September, and the murders of two young women, one a military steward with whom he may have flown.

Several sources have also told The Globe and Mail that the 46-year-old commander of Canadian Forces Base Trenton took detectives to the body of Jessica Lloyd, a 27-year-old who suddenly disappeared on Jan. 29 after texting a friend she had safely arrived home.

.....

According to those close to the investigation, Col. Williams' statement was delivered in a crisp, almost business-like fashion, less out of contrition, it appeared, than out of a sense of duty ingrained during a 22-year military career.

A lot of Canadian military personnel (current and former) are gutted about this. This guy was a Challenger and Airbus A-310 qualified pilot. He flew the Prime Minister and the Governor General (Canada's Head of State) overseas on multiple occasions and he also commanded at least one rotation at "Camp Mirage" Canada's forward logistical base somewhere in the UAE that supports our ongoing committment to Afghanistan. Scuttlebutt was that he was also potentially up for command of our Air Force element in Kandahar (Heron UAV's, Griffon and Chinook helos) in a future rotation.

He was also being groomed for General. If true the fact that he allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered a subordinate is just simply shocking and unbelieveable to Canadians, miilitary and civilian.... Let alone the possibly dozens of transgressions with civilians.

If true (innocent till proven guilty of course) how this guy was able to compartmentalize these sorts of heinous activities from his spouse, his family and a huge staff at a large military base is beyond me.
