Couldn't think what thread to put this in so started a new one. Maybe smokey engines, rocket assist, anything with smoke coming out it.

There used to be a lot of jato takeoffs from carriers. They were equally as smokey.

When I lived in East Anglia in the 70s and 80s the air was full of black smoking KC 135s, from Mildenhall. And there was an occasional B52 visit to there or possibly Lakenheath.

Isn't that a B52 in the photo?

Press release

The USAF has developed a new mission for it's B52 bomber fleet. It invovles getting them to fly in a group over the enemy country a few times with the smokey engines on full blast. This then creates a big hole in the ozone layer above the enemy and rains down soot, acid rain and CO2 on them. It burns when it hits.

A while back some B-52s were tested with engines which ran on a synthetic gas made from coal. No doubt that would be smokey.

A side question here.. are those Flares from that Su-27 the same type the RuAF use?

If so could the Flares confuse a chase oponent for a split second(all the smoke)..?

Thanks

@haavarla / Su27

Dense smoke in combination with flares is primary a good decoy for IR guided missiles.
Yes, RuAF uses that type of flares.
