An absolutely stunning photograph, just released by the U.S. Marine Corps, showing Capt. Christopher Prout with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 232, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing as he shoots an AIM-7 Sparrow missile from an F/A-18C Hornet near Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, on May 16, 2013..
Yea just heard that, pretty amazing what the pilot did.

Great photo.
Real cool photo. I did the same thing down there, and I will say that it was akin to having the space shuttle launching off your wing (the Sparrow that is).
I assume missile launches can be heard from the cockpit? I remember reading an unconfirmed (?) account from an F-15 guy about the AIM-120 making a pretty loud swoosh during launch.

I assume that you can't hear the "Swoosh" from a missile in the cockpit. Beacuse you have the helmet on.
The pilot helmet protects you from the noisy cockpit which is important not to get your ears deaf, or when firing missiles which are loud. That's why they made it to reduce the noise, and also for oxygen.

For now on this thread is going to be a "F/A-18 Hornet/SuperHornet Picture" thread.
It doesn't have to be a favorite, you can choose a Hornet or Super Hornet pic that's nice or a normal pic to post on this thread.
Steven
ok, thanks

Care to elaborate about what was amazing?
Reason is that.... VMFA-232 Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing shoots an AIM-7 Sparrow missile from an F/A-18C Hornet airplane while participating in a deployment for training near Tyndall Air Force Base. The DFT prepared the squadron for future combat and contingency operations.

Thank you, I did read that above. You didn't tell me what was amazing i it... Except maybe the Sparrow leaving the rail, that is. No offense, but the pilot did what was expected of him. Very well I'm sure, but nobody would expect any less from a professional.

Your welcome Frank, now need a photo from a pilot shooting a AIM-9x or a AMRAAM from a Super Hornet. :D

Pilots can hear the "Swoosh" from the missile the moment it leaves the aircraft. John Nichol and John Peters reported that the noise the missile (Sidewinder in Peter's case and Skyflash in Nichol's case) was rather loud when the missiles left the Tornado, even with the head gear on.

"When you run out of METEOR missiles, your going to need a BIGGER meteor to destroy them all but no one will be alive?
What does this mean?

What does this mean?
It means when you shoot the MBDA Meteor missile you'll have no more MBDA Meteor missiles, so then you'll need the meteor another word for asteriod to destroy all of your targets/enemy's but when you have the asteriod like a big one it will impact the whole world and that by standards means no one will be alive due to the meteor hitting the earth finishing all of the enemy's/targets. Pretty confusing to people but I'll think you'll get it. :)

Yeah, it was audible. I wouldn't say it was super loud, but you could hear it. More noticeable was the 700-1000 lbs or whatever coming off the wing and the huge flame and smoke trail.

I'd agree. The whole evolution is extremely controlled, due to safety concerns. There are about 100 million people that need explicit confirmation that you are about to shoot the right thing in the sky, before you ever pull the trigger (or pickle button in AF jets I guess). Beyond that, its the ordies and the avionics techs that actually make sure the thing works.
