Singapore signs up for F35 stealth fighter program

SINGAPORE, Feb 22 (AFP) - 03:56 GMT - Singapore has signed a letter of intent to join the US-led Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) development program, making it the first Asian country to take part, the ministry of defense announced here Saturday.
The document was signed in Hawaii by the ministry and the US Department of Defense and signified Singapore's option to purchase the new-generation F35 stealth fighters due for delivery to the US Air Force in 2008.

"The JSF is a potential candidate to meet the Republic of Singapore Air Force's longer term operational requirements for a multi-role fighter," the statement said.

Military sources said the supersonic F35 could replace the island republic's A4 Super Skyhawk and F5 Tiger fighters in the next decade.
