Just finished watching this movie for the umpteenth time. You know, the one where the USS Nimitz gets zapped back in time to encounter the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. How would a modern Nimitz class ship tackle this task? A-6's are history, so your primary attack platforms are going to be F/A-18's and possibly F-14 Bombcats. Weapons? Probably a mix of GBU-24B/B (with BLU-109 penetrator warheads), Skipper II's, JSOW's, Harpoons, and maybe some free-fall Mk 83's and Mk 84's. Think flak and/or Zekes would nail anyone?

Slater,

if I remember correctly this film was made in 1980. When you see the images of the aircraft being catapulted I don't see any example wich carried Harpoon SSM's. At that time you had a force made out of 24 F-14A, 24 A-7E and some 10/12 A-6E. The consequence here is that the Jap taskforce had to be attacked mostly with dumb bombs. Detecting the fleet and the first wave of aircraft shouldn't have been no problem because of the escorting Hawkeyes. In the film you see at the end the Nimitz-aircraft flying towards the Jap bombers and fighters (the first attackwave at 0740 hours). The 20 Tomcats (the other 4 standby on the carrier) should have been split in 2 parts. 12 attacking the bombers, the other 8 attacking the fighters. First from as far as possible with sparrow and phoenix. Each Tomcat carries 6 BVR missiles (so 120 missiles are heading to the Japs wich are caught completely by surprise). a few minutes later some 35 'zero'-fighters and some 65 'Val' and 'Kate' bombers are shot down. Most of the surviving aircraft are now hunted down with sidewinders and guns with offcourse no casualtieson USN-side.

At the same time Intruders and Corsairs are heading to the Jap taskforce. Some Corsairs are loaded with the walleye wich had to attackthe cariers. These bombs make the first jap losses as 2 fall on the Akagi and the other 2 hit the Soryu. Leaving both heavily damaged. Some seconds later after impact the rest of the attack force reaches the ships who are still completely surprised. The corsairs and intruders only attacking the most important ships ; the carriers and the battleships. After the first pass the carrier Hiryu is totaly ripped apart and sinking together with the battleship Mutsu. The 'Kirisjima' is damaged.

Corsiars which dropped their ordnance now begin to hunt down the few airborn zero's. With the second pass an intruder gets damaged and a Corsair is lost. Another carrier 'Kaga' and 2 heavy cruisers were left burning.

greetings,
