Best and worst: preparing navies for all possible worlds Jane’s Navy International
Nor should the increasing tensions between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan, marked by continuing artillery exchanges on their northern border, be ignored. Their relations will continue to shape their naval development. Although both of their navies do many other things, the building of a warfighting capability that will deter the other side remains their top priority in both operational and acquisition terms. The realisation of how vulnerable its navy ships were to Pakistan's Harpoon missiles during the 1999 Kargil conflict led the Indian Navy to invest heavily in a research programme with Israel that produced the 70 km-range Barak-8 anti-missile missile. Likewise, the news that Pakistan is to acquire eight submarines from China, alongside the appearance of Chinese nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) in the Indian Ocean, has seen India galvanise its submarine acquisition programme.
Quite poor research from Janes as is generally the case.
The Harpoon threat or subsonic missile threat was effectively countered by IN initially by using Barak-1 PDMS and upgrading the EW system on IN ships , Later for long range interception they went for Shtil/Shtil-1 system to deal with Harpoon and Air Targets , prior to this the best medium range SAM available to IN was SA-N-3 SAM.
Barak-8 SAM is to provide Long Range Defence against Supersonic Anti-Ship missile along with other Supersonic targets besides subsonic one
October 19, 2015: After nearly two years in discussions, the Indian government has finally agreed to push through a long-standing Indian Navy demand for a life extension of at least four of its eight effectively remaining Kilo-class submarines.
A deal is to be signed shortly with the Rosoboronexport that involves the upgradation/life-extension of the INS Sindhukesari at Zvevdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk Russia, with the other three boats to be refitted and updated with new weaponry and combat systems at a shipyard in India. A separate contract will be signed at a later stage for the additional three submarines, once a shipyard has been identified. The refit/upgrade move will be the second major programme on the Kilos contracted by the Indian Navy in the 1980s.

Vishnu, good job on the documentary. How about something on the the 209?
Also, eager to hear any updates on INS Vikrant.
INS Vikrant was laid down on 28th Feb 2009 and 2017 makes it the 8th year. Is it possible to do a report/documentary on the progress of the ship and its current status to coincide with the date?

Vishnu Nice Documentary on Kilo Subs of IN.
Guys love their ships to work in such claustrophobic environment , The worst is to have 1 toilet for a crew of 70 !
Hopefully we can see similar documentary on INS Chakra ;)
BTW have the modernised Kilo exercised with IN P-8I , How have they fared ?
