C - Carrier
V - Heavier than Air
N - Nuclear
The V is used to differentiate between lighter-than-air (airships - remember Macon & Akron ?) and heavier-than-air.
Like there are still lighter-than-air carriers in service ??
It's a pet campaign of mine to point out just how superflous that letter V is! :D
Just think of all the paint wasted on all those US Navy a/c with the squadron designator - VF, VFM, VAQ, VA etc etc - think of all the weight of those extra letter V's across the fleet !!
And take into account all the correspondence and documents. Cutting out the redundant letter V would save millions of keystrokes, gallons of ink, tons of paper etc.
Think of all the gallons of paint wasted in painting those giant letter V's on all the US Navy carriers.
All that stitching on the uniforms/caps etc
I could go on.................
Ken :D :D :D

I couldn't find any, though I don't like how the Tower is so far back! What ever happened to the other concept designs? I remember reading in "Popular Mechanics" once about the differen't designs. One had cats on each side of the Hangar deck, and another had an intergrated Ski jump bridge (that idea really appealed to me because mor often than not the area under the ski jump goes to waste.

-the tower is gonna go anyway....over the transition of the ships of this class....the tower will be eliminated....do u know what they'll call this class..or will it be just known as the cvn-21 class of aircraft carriers....also a lot of the features will be adapted on the USS g.h bush the last of the nimitz class....
Survivability. A redundant grid electrical system will enhance damage control features. Electrical auxiliary systems will require reduced maintenance and allow the ship to utilize all generated electric power more effectively than the current design, where the carrier cannot always efficiently access all power available.
Availability. Reduced maintenance and greater reliability will enable CVNX-1 to have a greater availability in reduced shipyard periods.
Flexibility. The advanced electrical features of this new powerplant will allow for the rapid reconfiguration of CVNX-1 to utilize advanced technologies, as they become available.
