The airport recorded year-on-year increase in freight movements for August
August 2021 saw Airport Authority Hong Kong release cargo traffic figures showing strong growth. During the month, freight through flow recorded a year-on-year increase of 15.5% to 429,000 tonnes.
All three cargo categories, namely imports, exports and transshipments recorded at least a 10% increase in August. Cargo exchanges with North America and Southeast Asia experienced the highest growth increase during the month.
During which, the airport handled 222,000 passengers with 12,845 flight movements, surging by 164.9% and 28.4% respectively.
The Airport handled around 7,000 passengers daily during the month, due to a significant increase in outbound transfer passengers from Mainland China.
On a 12-month rolling basis, HKIA handled 1.1 million passengers and 134,145 flight movements, recording year-on-year decreases of 96.4% and 46%, respectively. Cargo throughput rose 6.3% to 4.8 million tonnes.
Separately, Hong Kong won the “Top Airport Efficiency Excellence Award, Asia Pacific” in the 2021 Air Transport Research Society Benchmarking Report. This marks the eleventh time the airport has been recognised with this prestigious honor.
Alongside other Asia Pacific counterparts serving more than 40 million passengers annually, the international airport was commended for excellence in areas such as productivity efficiency, unit costs and cost competitiveness, financial results and airport charges.

A series of enhancement projects, including the transformation and refurbishment of boarding gates, dining outlets and shopping facilities, is also underway at the airport to prepare for the return of travelers.
