PROFILE: Ray Hanna

Ray Hanna (below) was already a great by the time he piloted Spitfire IX MH434. But the late New Zealander’s relationship with this most famous fighter, which began 50 years ago this year, only emphasised his renown — and, when the warbird scene took off in Britain, saw him becoming one of its defining figures. Half a century on from those formative flights, Ray’s friends, colleagues and daughter Sarah reflect on the qualities that made him such an outstanding exponent of historic aeroplanes, and the character of the man many call ‘the Master’
