Winston Churchill famously wrote in his book The Second World War, Volume 2: Their Finest Hour: “The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.” While the German U-boat threat had been vanquished the Cold War saw technology make submarines even harder to detect. The shortfalls in capability of the war era aircraft to counter more modern submarines was evident and so the Royal Canadian Air Force contracted Canadair to produce a new sub-hunter to meet the challenge.
