Wrapping up
Where are we? That’s what we were saying when we left off last issue as we suddenly realised that we were not where we should be. The visual fixes we were expecting to mark our location simply didn’t appear. This issue, we wrap up Stage 2 of Back to Basics by learning how we might get ourselves out of this very fine mess.
Brief recap
Our visual flight from Ashland-Parker (S03) to Grant Co. Regional/Ogilvie (5J0) appeared very straightforward(Figure 1). We departed Ashland-Parker at 09:00 in our A2A Simulations V35 Bonanza on a heading of 022°M as we climbed to 9,500ft. Our rather lazy flight planning indicated we should pass abeam Silver Lake and Table Rock airstrip at around 09:37. However, at that time, all we could see was a seemingly endless and featureless plain. We considered the factors involving flying for range or endurance, and now examine some techniques to get us back on track – literally.
