From small beginnings, Aegean Airlines has grown significantly and eventually took over the successor of its once-great rival, Olympic Airways. Lee Cross charts the development of this Star Alliance member airline and how it is dealing with the biggest challenge in its history.
Just before Christmas last year, Aegean Airlines revealed its plans for the coming year, stating that 2020 marked a “new beginning” and was “the starting point for more” for the carrier. Two months later, at an official ceremony on February 13, the company’s CEO Dimitrios Gerogiannis – who joined the company back in 1999 – presented Aegean’s first three Airbus A320neos, resplendent in a new livery and decked out with a refreshed cabin interior.
