Route 604 – Polish road ops exercise

Since the start of war in Ukraine, NATO has recognised the importance of flying from a road runway. Bartosz Głowacki reports on the latest Polish Air Force manoeuvres

In mid-March a Polish Air Force military exercise code-named ‘Route 604’ was held on the airport road section of the provincial road no 604 (known in Polish as Drogowy Odcinek Lotniskowy or DOL). It was the same site as the Route 604 exercise that took place last autumn at Wielbark, between the town of Ruskowo and Przezdziek Wielki, southeast of Olsztyn. Unfortunately, the poor weather impacted the all-important landings which would cause a problem during a real war.

Options if a base is destroyed

According to Poland’s Ministry of National Defence, there are currently 22 DOLs in Poland, including three in a condition suitable for operational use. The first is DOL Kliniska near Szczecin, the second runs along the A4 motorway, and the third is the recently modernized DOL Wielbark along road 604, which has been used twice now in a year to practice these drills.
