Yep, they've been trying to kill it for years. The big issue is that given its location the land values are astronomical however if they weren't going to just open more of those dreadful money traps the DFOs I'f have some sympathy for the new changes.

The other thing is that Melbourne already has Moorabbin airport which serves the same regional and light traffic that Essendon does. Essendon while of historic importance was long replaced by Tullamarine for international and interstate traffic.
