hiya!
got some questions for a model of an iraqi mig-23BN im working on, and would greatly appreciate input:
I read somewhere that iraqi mig-23BNs carried the exocet missile, is this true?
were they ever modified to carry other special weapons?
what woudl be typical war loadout be?
did they carry chemical munitions (db-2 or R-400)
thanks for any info!!
regards
Okay MigMan
I saw the picture of that Flogger H with what is supposed to be an AM-39 Exocet... but where is tha acquisition/guidance radar?
I think that this aircraft - and some others with sometimes "strange loads" -were displayed only to fool foreign intel specialists. Iraki where supposed too to have fitted their SA-2 Guideline with an infrared seeker...
Acording to me, the only aircraft wired to carry the Exocet - and which actually used them - where : SA 331 Super-Frelo / Super Etandard (five on loan - four sent back to the French Navy) and the Mirage F1EQ6.
The typical load for an Iraqi MiG-23BN is the same as for any other Flogger H...

Huh? That isn't a Flogger H. Can you not see the radome? No fin fillet. Looks like a Flogger G.
Yes Iraq fitted a lot of their SAMs with various seekers. They used a lot of these weapons in the No Fly Zones in an attempt to bring down Coalition aircraft without the need for radar guidance.

A lot of mix-ups IMO
First of all, the only MiG-23 that was seen carrying an Exocet was a modified ML - you can find pictures of it in this thread.
The BM was fitted with the IFR and displayed at the Baghdad airshow in 1989
At the same airshow there was an F1 EQ-4/5/6 with an ATLIS modified to guide the Kh-29L (and corresponding pylons)
There's no point in fitting a MiG-23BN with ATLIS pod, because it can guide the Kh-29L with its initial equipment in the nose

though whatever thethe pod on the mirage f.1, its WAY bigger than an atlis pod!!
Maybe it looks bigger because it has the protective plastic cover?
Atlis should be 2.54 meters long and 31 cm diameter
Kh-29L should be 3.8 meters long and 38 cm diameter

No, those are SA-6 fitted with what looks like the AA-8 seeker. I've also seen SA-3s with SA-2 bosters, but no SA-2s modified
with IR seeker
