every time I look for the number of aircraft for the Oriskany after it's conversion to an angled flight deck.. i'm always given WW2 figures. How many aircraft did this aircraft carry at the end of it's days?

This should give you some idea:

It looks to me like it could be 86 aircraft:

32 F-8
31 A-4
15 A-1

and the usual 8 in the various detachments.

It appears that during combat operations more aircraft are carried than during peace time ops.

Hope this helps.

Up to 80 were possible.
One pic from the 60s showed close to 50 on the flight-deck alone.
The A-4s did not consume much space.
" The Mighty O began her 11th cruise April 16, 1969. On board was Carrier Air Wing 19 with VF-191 and VF-194 in F-8J Crusaders, VA-23 and VA-195 in A-4E Skyhawks, VA-192 in A-4F Skyhawks, VAW-111 in E-18 Tracers, VAQ-130 in EKA-3B Skywarriors and VFP-63 in RF-8G photo Crusaders."
Not counting in the helicopters.

Impossible, because that CV entered service after WWII in the 50s.

"Impossible, because that CV entered service after WWII in the 50s"

Er I think he meant the Essex class as a whole rather
than the Oriskany itself.

Not too much honor to "Hamburger" about that.

sort of ;) me thoughts when they said 80, it was with WW2 era aircraft. I was thinking of something around 40-50 with a modern load.

OK that answers that. LOL

Anyway in 1973 during another Vietnam deployment it appears they carried 83 aircraft:

27 F-8J
40 A-7A/B
4 RF-8G
4 EKA3-D
4 E-1B
3 SH-3G
1 C-1A

^how about at the very end.. that's what I'm most concerned about and stated from the very beginning? I'mnot sure, but I do believe it had F-18s.

Actually this is what you asked first:

"how many aircraft on USS Oriskany after mod?"

No F-18 aircraft were in-service before Oriskany decommissioned in 1976. IOC for the F-18 was February 1981.

But heres the squadrons and the detachments for its last deployment. I dont know the exact numbers. But it being peacetime I would quess:

24 F-8
36 A-7
2-4 RF8-G
2-4 E-1B
2 SH-3G

CVW-19 (NM)
CV-34 ORISKANY
Sep.16, 1975 - Mar.3, 1976 (WestPac)

VF-191
Satan's Kittens
F-8J
VF-194
Red Lightnings
F-8J
VA-153
Blue Tail Flies
A-7B
VA-215
Barn Owls
A-7B
VA-155
Silver Foxes
A-7B
VFP-63 DET.4
Eyes of the Fleet
RF-8G
RVAW-110 DET.4
Firebirds
E-1B
HC-1 DET.4
Pacific Fleet Angels
SH-3G

Oriskany Decommissioned : Sep.20, 1976

my apologies.. guess it's not the Oriskany I was trying to look for. I was trying to find the aircraft load of the last "escort/light/non super carrier".. and got the Oriskany mixed up for something else. All I remember is this carrier lasted all the way into the 90s. :(

You would be looking for USS Midway CV 41.

This ship had been homeported in Japan from October 1973 until August 1991. She began stand-down on October 1, 1991 and decommissioned to reserve on April 11, 1992.

Her final air group was CVW-5 consisting of:

36 F/A-18
18 A-6E
4 EA-6B
4 E-2C
6 SH-3H

Here is a web page that has all US carriers and there history. www.navsource.org

you can check almost every ship that ever served in the navy starting around the turn of the century to present.

F-18,
last I checked she was sitting in Pensacola, Fl waiting to be sunk as an artifical reef.

Dan

Just check and apparently she is in Beaumont, Texas waiting out the 2006 hurricane season and something about the EPA delaying her sinking.

rickusn,
good call on the #'s. That's pretty much what we had onboard when i was on her in 88-89 (one long year)
