This review begins with a package delivery from Sweden, originating from the Tobii headquarters in Stockholm. You may or may not have heard of the brand but the clever folk there have been creating eye-tracking technology for 20+ years, allowing end-users to both monitor eye movements as well as harnessing that data with extended reality hardware.
While Tobii’s products have been previously utilised in neuroscience studies by optometrists in advanced driver training and the analysis of product placement by advertising gurus, its latest consumer offering is designed for us computer gamers.
The device I received was the Tobii Eye Tracker 5, released in 2020 and designed with the flight simulation market in mind. The unit itself is a slim black 285mm long sensor that attaches magnetically to the bottom border of one’s computer monitor, housing four near-infrared sensors in a sleek machined aluminium casing that captures and processes motion in six degrees of freedom. Despite the name, it functions as both an eye and head tracker, making it the perfect machine-human interface for flight simulation software.
