Looks like they tried to get at the guns with a can opener!

I fail to understand why every little panel has to be damaged in their treasure hunt. What's the story around the oil tank panel in front of the windscreen?

Perhaps they thought the pilot was trying to smuggle out some antiquities when he ran out of fuel? Muppets.

This very interesting bit of info was posted by Terry McGrady over on Hyperscale;

"On 28/6/42 ET574 Piloted by F/Sgt DCH Copping 785025 left 260 for a ferry flight to an RSU . The A/C flew with u/c locked down due to damage . An incorrect course was set and the A/C was thought to have crashed in the Desert due to fuel exhaustion.
F/Sgt Copping is listed as missing on that date
Now I'm not saying this is the A/C , just that it MIGHT be, in view of :-
a) there being no apparent signs of Battle damage
b) the fact that the U/C was wiped off in the crash"

Could be a possibility?

The elevator looks like it has flak damage. Nevertheless, that at least tallies with the physical evidence so shouldn't be dismissed.

F/Sgt DCH Copping is listed as dying on 28 June 1942 on cwgc so not 'missing'

Sadly, Flt Sgt Copping didn't make it. He came from Southend-on-Sea and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial. If that is indeed his aircraft, it needs to be treated with a lot more respect than it's getting ...

Interesting indeed; particularly considering the wheels-down landing in possibly unsuitable terrain.
