On April 5, at the Istrana air base (Treviso) – home to the 51st Fighter Wing – the Italian Air Force (ItAF) bid farewell to the AMX Ghibli fighter jet, which is retiring after 35 years of active.
The ceremony, presided over by the Chief of Staff of the ItAF, Air Squadron General Luca Goretti, was attended by top military officials, numerous dignitaries, and a significant representation of personnel who, over the years, had the opportunity to operate on the AMX.
Col Emanuele Chiadroni, Commander of the 51st Fighter Wing, emphasised the importance of the aircraft’s service in its activity: “After 35 years of operational life, the AMX closes an important chapter of a wonderful adventure. With the dual role that I hold, both as Commander of the last Wing to be equipped with this aircraft, and as an operational pilot on the AMX for many years, I feel obliged to sincerely thank all of you present at today's ceremony. With dedication, professionalism and devotion, you have studied the Ghibli, maintained it, prepared it, flown it, admired it, and defended it with gusto. This aircraft has been a source of inspiration for all of us, and we have always held a deep respect for it, demanding the best from it.”
